Retargeting is a form of online targeted advertising in which the advertising being displayed to a visitor is targeted based on previous Internet actions. These actions include search engine inquiries, website visits, previous clicks on promoted links or ads, etc. that didn't result in a call-to-action being completed.
Technically, Retargeting is a cookie-based technology that uses simple Javascript code to anonymously ‘follow’ users all over the Web.
When you visit a website that has the Retargeting Javascript installed, a cookie will be inserted into your browser. When you then navigate on a website that is in that retargeting network, related ads (banners or text) will be shown to you. E.g. A Google search for "Weber Grill" could possibly lead to a display ad for Weber Grill's on the next website you visit.
Most known retargeting networks are Google AdWords/AdSense, Facebook, Criteo and AdRoll. Retargeting is often referred to as Remarketing.
ClickMeter allows users to place retargeting javascript directly on the tracking links; not on the page of your website. This is particularly useful if the user is not redirecting the traffic directly to their website (e.g. you tweet about something).
